Top Five Games
Thursday, 9th November 2006
In light of the A-Grade's one run thrilling win over Goodwood, Club Secretary Brad Weidenhofer recounts his top five games during his five seasons at the club.
Number 1
PAOC 9 for 287 (Ramsay 80, Watson 63, Christophers 32) defeated Pembroke OS 8 for 270 (Watson 4 for 108, Wills 4 for 112)
The Weed says:: Who could forget one of the most dramatic games of cricket ever. The partnership between Ramsay and Watson on Day 1 and 40 overs straight from Marcus Wills on Day 2 are unforgettable. First A-Grade premiership.
Number 2
PAOC 8 for 265 (B.Weidenhofer 91, P.Schultz 77) defeated Old Ignatians 166 (N.Hugo 4 for 6, A.Goodwin 3 for 33)The Weed says:: First year at the club, first premiership. Who would ever forget the celebrations that followed.
Number 3
PAOC 307 (Carmody 85, Marantos 52, Martin 44, Weidenhofer 44, King 30, Drew 22) defeated Payneham 305 (Carmody 4 for 40, S.Richardson 2 for 30).The Weed says:: An epic game, no more than when the umpires walked off on Day Two and both teams remained in the middle - both desperately trying to avoid relegation. A memorable win for the Reds!

After coming off a good batting performance vs SHOC the Reds travelled to Payneham to face the bottom placed Dukes feeling that a good win would keep us out of the relegation zone.
In a game described by Peter Argent as "A battle of the cellar dwellers" this game was anything but with PAOC winning by just 2 runs in what was surely one of the most gripping games of turf cricket in memory. Chrisssss Drew did the right thing on Day one, winning the toss and batting on a scorching 40+ degree summers day. What followed was a batting clinic led by Greg 'Ul Haq' Carmody and Alex 'Foodland' Marantos. The Reds posted an imposing 7 for 307 with the Weed, Roopa and 'Ball In' King also making valuable contributions with the bat.
Day 2 brought contrasting conditions to the first week with light rain falling in the morning on a muggy day. With covers down, the pitch was in surprisingly good nick which allowed Payneham to have a real crack at our total. With Nick "Bad Bloke" Mosey leading the charge for Payneham, the Dukes looked in control. Enter "Inzy". Being handed the ball after tea Greg showed plenty of guile managing to dismiss Mosey and start making inroads into the Payneham tail. Needing just 52 off the last 14 overs with 5 wickets in hand the Reds took two more wickets in good time making the equation 3 wickets with just 30 runs to play with. As the rain continued to fall - the umpires, much to the dismay of everybody on the field and in the stands, decided it was too wet to continue and walked off the field leaving both teams stranded in the middle of the ground. With the covers down once again the game looked certain to end in a draw, however the heavens did the right thing and just minutes away from the cancellation of the game we were back on. Bowling with a wet ball, 'Inzy' continued to put it in the right spot and managed to pick up a couple more wickets. In the biggest choke since Norman in the 96 masters - Payneham managed grab defeat from the jaws of victory handing Princes the most memorable (non finals) victory of my career. 'Inzy' finished with 4 for 40 with S Richo 2 for 30. Credit also to Rayner who bowled very tightly in the final overs.
Number 4
PAOC 152 (Weidenhofer 79, Walter 40) and 4 for 129 (Marantos 60, M.Richardson 35) defeated Goodwood 151 (Drew 5 for 30, Butler 3 for 27).
The Weed says:: A game that we didn't really deserve to win but for an inspired bowling performance from Chris Drew (5 for 30) and the evergreen Simon Butler (3 for 27)
Number 5
PAOC 197 (Weidenhofer 60, Pontifex 45) defeated Flinders University 115 (Goodwin 3 for 23, S Richardson 3 for 31) and 78 (Weidenhofer 4 for 34) outright. The Weed says:: An outright that came from nowhere. Probably also memorable because I took wickets - the first and only time at the club!

An important toss to win on a very green pitch was the ideal start as Marcus Wills and Sam Richardson made early inroads into the Flinders batting line-up. It could have been better if the slips cordon were not involved in a embarrassing situation where a skied drive landed in the middle of 5 fielders. Willsy bowled brilliantly but mostly without luck to take 2/18 off 16 straight overs. Adam Richardson came on and took a couple of crucial wickets just before the tea break to have Flinders 6/68 off 37 overs. Andrew Goodwin bowled well again to take 3/23 and Sam Richo chimed in with 3/31. Flinders all out for 115 and we had to bat for 19 overs which was the same amount of overs we had to face from Walkerville in the first game and we were determined not to falter this time. Ned Pontifex was very solid and Brad Weidenhofer again showed us what talent he has as we cruised to 1/69 at the end of play.
Heavy Rain threatened the start of play the next Saturday but we got underway 30 mins later and the two batsmen carried us to 114 before Pontifex was out for 45 and Weidenhofer succumbed to the blistering pace of their opener for 60. Quick runs was on the cards as we set for 200. Some late hitting from the Ox and Hammer got us to 197 with a lead of 83. 33 overs were remaining as we went about destroying Flinders in their second dig. Wills broke through early but A Richardson got 2 quick wickets and Willsy one more to have them 4/25. A partnership formed and all hope for an outright looked gone until A Richo created a run out and Weidenhofer stepped up to the bowling crease. His leggies were just what we were after as he took 4 for 34 with the highlight being a freak catch at short leg by Sam Richo as it crashed into his armpit. Greg Stirling took his 4th catch for the match and were in there with a chance. The score was at 78 with the opposition skipper at the crease and one over to go and the ball went to the big fella Wills. He told his captain he would do it and he did! Christophers took a great catch up at the stumps and it was all over as Razzle Dazzle boomed from the middle. A super win and into the top 4.
