Report by Bob "Stormy" Waters

On a glorious summer day at PAC, the Chester Bennett Cup, which PAOC had held for the past two years, was convincingly won by Saints with time - and 30 overs - to spare.

The Front Oval was presented, in excellent order, and with a perfect pitch for batting, Princes could only manage a meagre 104 runs from 43.3 overs and so failed to bat out the 50 overs available.

After losing a wicket in the game's opening over, PAOC fought hard against a keen attack to be 3 for 34 in slow time until Tom Moffat and Greg Carmody produced the only fruitful stand of 49 together, after which the last six wickets went down at result intervals to set Saints the smallest target of 105 runs to win in the afternoon, with 50 overs available.

The School provided the players with a generous luncheon following which the Saints' captain, Chris Taarnby, launched a vigorous assault on the Princes' bowling as the opening pair put on 78 runs, in smart time before Camody had Taarnby caught for a brisk 53. From this point, Harford, who had supported his captain well in the opening stand, then took over the scoring for Saints, but Carmody took 2 more wickets quickly.

The Saints' objective, however, was to close for Princes to cause any real upset, but Harford unexpectedly fell with the scores tied at 104 for a well-compiled 45 after which Delmont scored the winning single, Saints' 4 for 105 coming from only 19.2 overs with 30.4 overs still available and unused - an easy win done "on the bit".

The Saints' scorecard was somewhat bizarre in that Taarnby (53), Harford (45) and 6 sundries produced 104 runs, neither batsman numbers 3 or 4 scored a run and Delmont at No. 5 scored the winning single.

At the presentation of the Chester Bennett Cup to the Saints team, our PAOCA President, Simon Miller, praised our rivals on their clean-cut victory, thanked the School for the excellent ground and arrangements and luncheon for all the participants, thanked the umpires Barry Drogemueller and Jack Alchin and the scorers, with a special mention for Paul Morris (PAOC) and Rob Rankine (SPOC) for once again coming over from Minlaton, real loyalty.

Tom Moffat with his 27 runs and 1 for 2 and Greg Carmody with 19 and 3 for 11 performed well but the PAOC efforts were well below expectations as the scores clearly revealed.

Saints were assured that the Princes camp will make it a major priority before next year's match at Saint Peters College and recover the Chester Bennett Cup.

The present score from 27 contests stands at 14 wins for PAOC, 11 wins for SPOC and 2 no results from bad weather (1979, 1984).
