CHOO CHOO THE RED JUGGERNAUT
Wednesday, 30th November 2005
1977/78 Ian Chappell, Kerry Packer and World Series Cricket ... 1985/86 Kym Hughes' Rebel Tour of South Africa ... 2005/06 Tom Martin and the PAOCFC Rebel Tour. Come see the Red Juggernaut in their second round clash against Walkerville this Sunday.
PAOCFC REBEL CRICKET TOUR 2005-06
No one would argue that the influx of players from the PAOC Football Club has not been of huge benefit to the PAOC Cricket Club over the recent years. These players have added their own unique thread to the rich tapestry that is PAOCCC. Some may argue that this has not been a one way street and you need only look back to the early 90's when Peter 'Butts' Buttery was filling in our sides with year 9, 10 and 11 students (e.g. Aaron 'Chopper' Read, Justin 'Meatballs' Trim and Sean 'Shark' Tanner), who in later years then moved to the footy club. If you asked Greg 'Colonel' Sanders he would tell you it has been happening forever. However, one does think that maybe the last few years have seen some real characters appear from the footy club, the likes of, Anthony 'A4' Allen, David 'Burra' Reed, Matthew 'Fats' Lowe and Michael 'Godfather' Siciliano to name a few.
This summer has seen the footy club take this relationship one step further, with the launch of the PAOFC Rebel Cricket Tour for season 2005-06. In a concerted effort to get its members interested in playing cricket, footy club chairman Justin Trim, supported the notion forward to enter a side within the ATCA Turf 20's competition. The Cricket Club (thanks to the efforts of Brad Weidenhofer) and ATCA (thanks to Andrew Ramsay) were more than willing to see this concept eventuate with the side being registered under the cricket club's name.
The footy club team was suitably named the 'Red Juggernaut', Tom 'Roopa' Martin was named captain and there was little surprise that Matt 'Fats' Lowe was subsequently appointed vice captain.
There was so much interest in this Rebel Tour concept that the squad of the Red Juggernaut was filled within a few days, in scenes reminiscent of the Kerry Packer/World Series days. Feel free to visit the footy club website (www.paocfc.com) for more details about the Red Juggernaut.
THE RED JUGGERNAUT GETS UNDERWAY
On the 13 November 2005 the Red Juggernaut rolled out to University of SA Oval out at Mawson Lakes, for an 11am start against Elders/Uni SA. For some reason Roopa was keen to bat second, but lost the toss, and Elders surprisingly sent us in to bat.
Our innings started with great confidence, Roopa was dropped on the first ball and Matt 'Jonty' Johnson off his first ball faced before bowled in the third over. Roopa was dropped on another skied shot while on 13 and Stuart 'Hark' Harkness tested the Elders catching ability one to many times and was finally caught. David 'Dangerous' Gerner was next in and after clubbing a 6, we were hoping for a repeat of his innings of 91 off 28 balls in a 2-day match last season, this was not to be as he too holed out on the boundary line to another catch. This brought chairman, Justin 'Meatball' Trim out to the centre and he looked in good form until he ran himself out, nearing the halfway mark we looked in a tentative position at 4/74 after 9 overs.
Nick 'Jacko' Jackman strolled out to the crease and the fun began. Jacko was content initially to push the ball for singles keeping Roopa on strike, who was having a field day, but eventually Jacko also upped the ante. In just 8 overs Roopa and Jacko had taken the score to 167, when Roopa walked of the field (retired) on 87 of just 44 balls, including 2 fours and 8 sixes, their partnership of 93 coming off just 48 balls.
David 'Burra' Reed and Jacko continued the onslaught, taking 34 off the last 3 overs to bring our total to 201, Jacko finishing with 61 off 38 balls including 1 four and 5 sixes. Elders' player Bennett was the pick of the bowlers snaring 3 /30 off his 4 overs, while Tredrea was left a shell-shocked after seeing 60 runs off his 4 overs.
Taking to the field Roopa got Jacko to take the gloves, which was an interesting move since Jacko was our opening bowler. Whatever the reason, Roopa clearly had faith in his bowling attack, with Burra taking the new ball. We looked set to follow in Elders lead with Meatballs dropping a catch in Burra's first over. Fats struck with his first delivery for the day, but the tables turned when Andrew 'Skull' Heitmann dropped and then Hark dropped catches off Fats' bowling.
This was forgotten however, as the next wicket to fall saw the start of the Lowe family show. Andrew 'Sticks' Lowe took an absolute blinder off brother Fats' bowling that their father will regret missing; the brothers went on to pick up 7 wickets between themselves. Skull chimed in with an economical spell of 1/17 off 3 overs and Shaun 'Beardy' Scannell contributed well with 2 wickets.
The Red Juggernaut won comfortably in the end thanks in part to Fats' incredible 5/32 off 4 overs, but mainly to Roopa's captains knock which won him the man of the match award. The players retired to the clubrooms to have a beer with the opposition and enjoy the great afternoon tea the laid on. Many thanks to our keen supporters, Andy 'witness the fitness' Will and Alex 'Solarium' Taylor and our 12th man Anthony 'A4' Allen who did a great job on the scorebook. A full score card with all the stats is provided below along with details of the round two clash.
After the match the Red Juggernaut players rushed to Payneham Oval, via the bottle shop, to watch and give plenty of vocal support to the two Cricket Club teams. Unfortunately they were both outclassed by a professional Payneham outfit lead by fellow old reds Alan Favell (Coach) and Nick 'Captain Grumpy' Mosey (A Grade captain).
