PAOC out to retain Chester Bennett Cup

Recount of last year's match, by Bob 'Stormy' Waters
On Wednesday 23 February 2005, the Annual Match for the Chester Bennett Cup was played on St Peters College. Marcus Wills was captain and four of our current players played. On a fine hot day on the famous Main Oval at St Peters College, PAOC lost the toss and fielded first. After a promising opening stand of 32, Saints lost wickets to a determined Princes attach to be reeling at 6 for 62, but Delmont (40*) and Bailey put on 61 together. Once this partnership was broken, wickets fell regularly for SPOC who eventually reached a moderate 137 with twelve of their allotted overs unused.
Princes begain their reply uncertainly in the afternoon, although Tom Tamblyn (36) and Todd Ferguson (21) both batted well. The match remained open with Princes at 5 for 84 against a persistent Saints attack. At this point, Sam Tyler and John Tamblyn joined in an unfinished stand of 54 in even time to see Princes to a convincing five wicket victory with 13 overs to spare. PAOC retained the Chester Bennett Cup, the score now being Princes' way 14 victories to 10 by Saints, with 2-washouts from 26 matches.
St Peters College presented their magnificent Main Oval in perfect condition and provided both teams with an enjoyable luncheon. Both teams are appreciative to Adelaide Turf umpires Bob Ball and Doug French for their services. Our Princes player Paul Morris again made the long return journey from Minlaton to play and pouched two excellent slips catches early to inspire the bowlers.
